Hawaii Online Driver Education and Hawaii Licensing Procedures

Congratulations on starting the process of applying for your Hawaii learner's permit or first Hawaii driver license. Hawaii has a Graduated Driver License Program for Hawaii teen drivers, and there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure that applying for your Hawaii driving license goes as smoothly as possible. So let's get started.

Hawaii Instructional Permit or Hawaii Learner Permit

When you turn 15 and a half, you can finally apply for an Hawaii instructional permit, otherwise known as an Hawaii learner permit. In order to apply for your Hawaii learner's permit, you'll need to have the following:

Original birth certificate and social security card
Get your parent or guardian to sign a consent form
At the Hawaii Department of Transportation, provide proper identification
And don't forget, proof of residential address
The $5 instructional permit fee

Got all that? Then head to your local office, apply, and take the required tests. If you survived, then congratulations. You just earned your Hawaii learner's permit. However, remember that you must carry your Hawaii learner's license at all times and be accompanied by a licensed driver who is at least 21, sitting in the front passenger seat. After you've had your Hawaii learner's permit for 6 months, you'll be able to apply for an Hawaii intermediate license.

The Hawaii Provisional Driver's License or Hawaii Intermediate License

In order to apply for your first Hawaii provisional driver license, you'll need the following:

A valid Hawaii learner's license
No traffic violations within the past six months
Complete a 30 hour classroom course with either
Six hours of behind-the-wheel trainer with a DOT-certified instructor or
DOT-certificate simulator driver education course and two hours of behind-the-wheel training with a DOT-certified instructor.

At the Hawaii Department of Transportation, you'll present your Hawaii learner's license and the required materials. Then comes the dreaded road test! If you survive, then congratulations. You've just earned your Hawaii provisional driver license! Once you turn 17 and have held your Hawaii provisional license for 6 months without any traffic violations, you will earn your Hawaii full license.

Hawaii Teen Driver License Restrictions and Penalties

With an Hawaii learner's permit, you must always with a licensed driver who is at least 21 and in the front passenger seat.

Hawaii Intermediate License Restrictions:

Always have your Hawaii provisional license on hand
All occupants must wear seat belts
You must not have more than one person below the age of 18 unless your parent or guardian is with you

Also, no driving between 11PM and 5AM unless:

Your parent or guardian is with you
You're driving from your job--you must have your employer's information and job hour verification on hand
You're traveling from a school activity (and have verifiable information on hand)

For your first violation of the above requirements, your Hawaii license will be suspended for 3 months. All subsequent violations will result in 6 month revocation. But when you turn 18, all of these restrictions are removed!

Hawaii Auto Insurance Hawaii Financial Responsibility Laws

Once you receive your Hawaii driver's license, you're ready to drive--or are you? Any vehicle registered in Hawaii must be covered by liability insurance. The minimum coverage is:

$10,000 for personal injury
$20,000 per person
$40,000 for property damage.

If you are caught driving without Hawaii mandatory liability insurance, you could be fined. And, if you're involved in an accident and cannot provide proof of insurance, your Hawaii learner's permit or Hawaii provisional license will be suspended.

Hawaii Drunk Driving, Cell Phone, and Text Messaging Laws

As a new Hawaii driver, it's important for you to learn about Hawaii drunk driving, cell phone, and text messaging laws.

Upon your first conviction of an Hawaii DUI (0.08), you will face the following penalties:

Your Hawaii license will be suspended for 90 days
$150 to $1000 fine
An additional $500 fine if a child under 15 was in your vehicle
mandatory substance abuse or alcohol education program
72 hours of community service
Jail sentence of 48 hours to 5 days

And of course, further Hawaii DUI convictions will result in increased jail time, community service, fines, and Hawaii license suspension or even Hawaii license revocation.

Currently, in Hawaii you must use a hands-free device if driving while using a cell phone. The maximum fine is $150.
