Indiana Driver License Requirements at-a-glance:

DMV Info
  • Minimum Age for Learner Permit 15 1/2 years old if enrolled in a driver education course (16 years if not taking drivers ed)
  • Learner Permit Holding Period 180 days (as of July 1, 2010)
  • Minimum Age for Driver License 16 years, 180 days WITH Driver Education (as of July 1, 2010); 16 years, 270 days WITHOUT Driver Education
  • Minimum Amount of Supervised Driving 50 hours, including 10 at night (as of July 1, 2010) must be completed with a certified driving instructor, or a licensed driver who's over 25 years of age (or 21 years of age if the licensed driver is a spouse).
  • Road Test Yes, but may be waived if student completes driver education
  • Unsupervised Driving Rules Probationary license holders--for first six (6) months, you may not drive between 10pm and 5am unless a 25-year-old licensed driver is seated in the front passenger seat (exceptions are commuting to or from work, school, or a religious activity). After the first 180 days up until your 18th birthday, you may not drive on Sunday through Thursday nights between the hours of 11pm and 5am, and Friday and Saturday nights from 1am to 5pm unless unless a 25-year-old licensed driver is seated in the front passenger seat (exceptions are commuting to or from work, school, or a religious activity).
  • Passenger Rules No passengers may ride with you during the first 180 days after receiving your probationary license (except for immediate family--specifically, your children, siblings, or your spouse), unless the front passenger seat is occupied by a licensed driver who is 25 or older (or 21 if licensed driver is a parent/guardian or certified driving instructor).
  • Telecommunications Devices Drivers under the age of 18 are prohibited from using telecommunications devices (cell phones, texting, etc.) while operating a motor vehicle. The only exception is placing an emergency call to 9-1-1.
  • Nighttime Driving No driving between 10pm and 5am for the first 180 days after receiving license. Starting with the 181st day of holding your license up until your 18th birthday, you may not drive between 11pm to 5am Sunday--Thursday, and 1am to 5am Friday--Saturday. However, you may drive at any time if you are accompanied by a licensed driver who's at least 25 and seated in the front passenger seat, or if you are commuting to/from work or school.
  • Staying in School If you're under 18, your driving privileges will be automatically withdrawn if you drop out of school. Additionally, you will need to conduct yourself in a responsible manner while at school. Your principal is required by law to notify the Indiana BMV to invalidate your driver's license upon your SECOND SUSPENSION FROM SCHOOL in one (1) academic year. Habitual truancy and expulsion from school will also result in the loss of your driving privileges. To put it straight, if you want to be cool, stay in school!
